Sikkim Akademi was formally inaugurated on 6th July 2002. It’s an autonomous body formed by the Sikkim Government, basically to develop culture and literature of Sikkim, to promote and co- ordinate literary, linguistic and other fine art activities as well to form a cultural bridge between the State and the Nation.

Generally, Sikkim Akademi has been established as a State Akademi, wherein
in its ambit of activities accommodate literature, linguistics, paintings, sculpture, music and theatre
etc. This organization is registered under Sikkim govt. notification 1/CA/02, 11th April 2002,
Certificate of incorporation No. 1277, Volume 1.
Through the Akademi in its constitution has incorporated a total of 23(twenty-three) objectives, it
has focused mainly in ‘to work dedicatedly towards development of culture, language and literature of Sikkim, to encourage literary and art-based activities and to cement the cultural unity of the nation’, which has been highlighted above also.
